Short Story

by Castgimp

I never showed you these?

No.

No shit. I've been collecting these for years. I thought I showed them toyou.

I never even knew you had them.

I started taking these right after I got the camcorder. Here, let me slap atape in.

You shoot 'em all here on campus?

No. A lot. But they're from all over. This first guy I shot on vacationin Florida.

Shit! Look at that! He's hot. Broken ankle?

Yeah, I think so. Look at the way he moves. I think he was still in realpain.

It must have just happened.

I think so.

Look how white the cast is.

I know. So clean. It looks brand new.

Great crutches.

I like the way he leans on them.

Where was this?

The mall. I was following him. Here, watch this.

Oh shit.

Yeah. Isn't that great. He almost fell. And look. He banged the cast onthe railing there when he stumbled. Look at him grimace.

Shit that must have hurt like hell.

Did you get to talk to him?

No. Not this one. OK here. This next sequence is great.

Where was this?

New Hampshire. On our ski trip. I parked my car in the parking lot of theemergency clinic there. I was shooting from my car on their way out.

Oh man that guy's in pretty bad shape.

Yeah. Hip to toe cast. He must have fallen halfway down the mountain.

I bet he was a screamer.

Yeah, he looks like it. Can you imagine riding the sled down the mountainwith him in it?

What the hell?

I got a zoom. Look at his toes.

Beautiful. So long. I like the way they stick out of the cast.

Yeah. And that's a plaster cast, not fiberglass. You don't see that muchanymore. And wooden crutches. Not metal. That's why I like shooting inNew Hampshire. They still do it the old fashioned way.

He seems pretty good on the crutches, even with the ice in the parking lot.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think it's the first time for him. I think he's hadhis leg in a cast before. He moves too well to be new at it. Wonder if hedid it skiing both times?

Probably. Looks like the ski-bum type. Look at how tan his face is.

All right. This one coming up is one of my best. This is the soccertournament last spring.

When Bilke broke his ankle?

Yeah!

You got that on film?

The whole thing.

Shit.

Look. This is just before he collided with that guy from Michigan. Here itcomes...

Oh my god! Look at his ankle!

I know. Look at his foot. See the way it's twisted around? I knew rightaway that was a serious injury.

Shit. Look at him rolling around.

Quiet. You can hear him screaming in the background.

Oh man. That sends a chill up my spine. The stands got really quiet.

It was haunting. Look, here come the coaches onto the field.

Do they put him on a stretcher?

No. They didn't have one. They fucking walked him off the field, on theirshoulders. Wait till you see it.

What're they doing now?

Examining him. Moving his ankle around to see if it's broke. Like thatain't obvious. Now look. They're taking his fucking shoe off. Not abrain in their head.

Oh man look at his sock!

I know. I got a close-up of that.

It's so swollen already.

Internal bleeding. Now they're going to get him up.

I can't watch.

Yes! This is the best part.

They should be shot.

He's tough. Look at him. Jesus look at him.

I can't believe it. Did you follow him to the hospital?

No. I couldn't get out of the stands in time. But I got one of him about aweek later in his cast. That's coming up in a few minutes. First I gotthis other guy.

Oh man look at that.

Isn't that just about perfect?

Bubble butt. Red hair. Ankle in a cast. Wooden crutches. Hunky jock.Long toes. Shit look at him move.

I know. Look how he holds his ankle and foot up off the ground. The tipsof his toes just graze the grass when he walks. And look at the way heleads with the crutches, pulling himself through and swinging that ankleforward.

Is that on campus?

Yeah. On the quad.

Who is he?

I don't know. I never saw him again.

You carry that camera with you all the time?

Just about. You never know.

What is this?

This was the graduate school fair. In the union. All these graduateschools come in and talk to students. They each got a table. Like a tradefair. Now look at this kid with his ankle in a cast.

He's looking at law schools.

Yeah but wait.

It's pretty crowded. Is he gonna' fall?

No. Shut up! Just wait.

He's talking to that guy behind the table. What is that, Temple?

Yeah. Temple Law School. Now watch. There!

Holy shit! Look at that. He swung his foot right up on the table!

I know it. Isn't that great? Look at the look on the face of the guy fromTemple!

He's got his cast sitting right on the table! Right by this guy's hand!

I know. Look. He's trying to talk to this kid, but he can't take his eyesoff his foot.

He musta' been tired of dragging that cast around.

I bet his ankle was throbbing. Probably swollen up from walking around allday. He swung it up there to try and relieve the pressure. I thought thatguy from Temple was going to wet his pants.

I think maybe he did.

Now watch this!

He's going to fall!

No. But he stumbles, see, and drops his crutches, and his bag, and this guyfrom Temple is trying to help him...

He's just making it worse.

I know. I thought they were both going to end up on the floor.

Is he touching his toes?

I think so. The kid started to fall and he went to grab the cast to holdhim up but he got his toes instead.

Look at that kid's face!

That must've hurt like hell.

Can you imagine?

Well you can be pretty sure he's going to get into law school.

At least at Temple.

Here. This is Bilke again, with his cast.

He's not moving so good.

No. He was really busted up. They had to put a pin in. I read in thepaper he tore his ankle to hell. Broke two bones. Ripped most of theligaments. They did surgery twice.

He looks like he's in agony. Look at how tentatively he's walking.

I know. It's like he's afraid to move.

Did you get to talk to him?

Yeah. Afterwards. He said the pain was unbearable. He said even puttingthe crutches down on the ground ahead of him to take the next step joltedhis body enough to make his ankle ache. And he wasn't sleeping. The painwas keeping him up at night. Said he couldn't get comfortable.

Look at him struggling with those steps.

I know. Look at the strain on his face. Pure pain. I almost had to putthe camera down here but I just couldn't stop.

Did he ever mend all the way?

I don't think so. I see him limping around campus every once in a while. Idon't think his ankle will ever be right.

Shit. I'd like to try teaching him to walk again.

I know. There's a job I could look forward to every morning. I actuallyheard they might have to re-break his ankle.

You're kidding!

No. It just didn't heal right the first time.

You gonna get the rights to film that?

I should, shouldn't I?

You ever get in trouble with this camera? Don't people get pissed off, youfilming them?

It's a free country.
